DescriptionThe main goal of the summer school is to train graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in the fields of paleoceanography, paleoclimatology, marine geology and their associated methodological approaches and techniques. A special attention will be given to polar and subpolar environments and to ice-ocean-atmosphere interactions and their role in climate dynamics. The program will provide in-depth insights into the various methods used for investigation of environmental, hydrological and climate changes in an Arctic-subarctic context using terrestrial, lacustrine and oceanic records. The summer school will be centered on four days of fieldwork on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River, in the Sept-Iles area, which will be complemented with classes given by international invited lecturers, workshops involving the students, and four days of hands-on exercises. Fieldwork exercises will focus on methods such as underwater sediment coring, multibeam bathymetry, side-scan sonar, water mass property monitoring, sub-bottom acoustic profiling and landform characterizations. Workshops will allow elaborating and discussing key questions regarding the dynamics of the cryosphere. Classes and laboratory work will take place at Geotop-UQAM, which offers cutting-edge laboratory and teaching facilities in the lively downtown of Montreal, Canada. Fieldwork will take place in the Port-Cartier/Sept-Iles region, on the north shore of the St. Lawrence estuary (province of Quebec).
